What the evidence says

A review of 34 articles identified organisational culture as central to ambulance employees’ use of mental health support. Stigma and perceived box-ticking were barriers; time to access support and normalising its use were enablers.

What this means in everyday terms

Providing a service does not tell us whether people feel able to use it. Understanding uptake includes listening to the person’s experience of the workplace.

A starting point for practice

Invite anonymous feedback about the support pathway: is it clear, practical during working hours and trusted? Ask what staff need explained before they would consider using it.

What the evidence cannot tell us

The review combines research and grey literature, largely concerning ambulance employees. It identifies perceived barriers and enablers rather than proving that a specific support model is effective for every workforce.

Practice questions are editorial applications of the evidence, not evaluated interventions.
